FAQ

The Brampton Housing Provider Association refrains from calling themselves a “Landlord Association” due to the nuanced nature of land ownership in Canada. In Canada, the most secure type of land title is Fee Simple, which grants the holder ownership of the land for an indefinite period. However, this ownership is subject to certain rights and obligations, including those related to Indigenous land rights.

When you buy property in Canada, you typically acquire Fee Simple title, which essentially means you have a lifelong lease on the land. However, the ultimate ownership of the land still resides with the Crown, representing the government, or in the case of Indigenous land, with Indigenous communities. This arrangement reflects the historical and ongoing land rights of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Therefore, while housing providers may have legal rights to use the land for residential purposes, the underlying ownership remains with either the Crown or Indigenous communities. This distinction is why the association prefers to refer to its members as “housing providers” rather than “landlords,” as it reflects the shared ownership and stewardship of the land in Canada.

The Brampton Housing Providers Association (BHPA) is a solidarity voice of Brampton Housing Providers. It is dedicated to promoting affordable and sustainable housing in Brampton. Our mission is to support and advocate for housing providers, tenants, and the community to ensure everyone has access to safe and affordable housing.

At BHPA, we are committed to help housing providers, tenants and community a whole.
